A warning for gamers — a Ohio teenager said he was scammed while playing the popular video game “Fortnite.”
Jack Bates and his mother said a hacker convinced him to hand over his username and password.
The 13-year-old said the other gamer told Bates he could give him more “skins.”
That other player took everything over after logging into Bates’ account, changing his email password, recovery passwords and phone number. The hacker now had any personal information available from that email account.
Since Bates’ mother’s credit card number was attached to the game, the scammer also had access to her account.
As a further insult to injury, the scammer even killed off Bates’ character, which he had invested hundreds of dollars into leveling-up.
For those wanting to prevent this from happening to themselves or their children, gaming websites recommend never sharing personal information and to use credit cards that are not linked to a bank account.
